Message from the President

Chapter Members:

Fall is my favorite time of year. The weather cools considerably from summer, there are football games all of the time and everyone who’s licensed is calculating how to squeeze those CPE hours in before December!

TSCPA President Mike Cain and Executive Director Brad Floyd are visiting the chapter for the October meeting, so please consider attending to hear the state of TSCPA. For those of you who did not attend the September luncheon, the TSCPA headquarters has bestowed an exemplary honor upon our chapter. Last winter the Memphis Chapter led the charge statewide by donating over $38,000 to headquarters for the new building addition. Because of our chapter’s generosity, the main board room will be named the “Memphis Room.” Thank you headquarters for this honor!

One of the TSCPA Council’s primary directives is educating today’s students about the profession. Many of us have great stories to tell about our careers. Have you ever shared them with a high school or college student? All you need to be willing to do is to volunteer an hour or two of your time. We even have a video that explains about the diverse opportunities in the profession. Please call Ginny Szalay at 901/683-8899 and we’ll get you involved!

We’ll see everyone on Oct. 14 and let’s give a warm welcome to both Mike and Brad!

Ted

Lunch Speakers

R. Michael Cain was installed as the 2008-09 TSCPA President during the 78th Annual Convention and Educational Conference in Franklin, Tenn. Cain is the co-managing partner of Lattimore, Black, Morgan & Cain, PC, in Brentwood, Tenn. A member of TSCPA for 30 years, Cain has served in a number of leadership capacities within the society, including serving on the TSCPA Council and Board of Directors, as well as on several state committees, including the Finance Committee and Personal Financial Planning Committee, of which he is a past chair. He has also held several leadership positions within the Nashville Chapter of TSCPA.

Cain also concurrently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of TSCPA’s Educational & Memorial Foundation, which provides comprehensive continuing education for CPAs and awards academic scholarships to deserving accounting students. This year, the foundation will award more than $150,000 in scholarships to accounting students attending Tennessee’s colleges and universities.

Mike and his wife, Jane Ann, reside in Brentwood, and they enjoy movies, theatre and the symphony in their spare time. Their family includes two adult sons Ryan and Wes, daughter-in-law Courtney and grandchildren Olivia and Wyatt.

Afternoon CPE Speaker

James Montgomery, a.k.a. "Ask Radio Jim"  has been the host and producer of a weekly computer and technology radio talk show on Clear Channel radio station WREC600 every Saturday morning from 11 a.m. - noon  for the past 14 years. He also serves as a weekly columnist for “The Memphis Business Journal,” and a weekly television personality for FOX13 Good Morning Memphis.

In his career, Montgomery has created two successful corporations, including the current development and growth of an 18 year-old computer sales and service business with more than 100 accounts. He is currently the president and CEO of Telelink, Inc., a computer business specializing in corporate computer sales, consulting, repair, cabling, network solutions, web hosting and e-mail solutions to businesses in the Memphis and Mid-South area.

He also started and served as president and CEO of Online Backup, Inc., a corporation that provided backup for critical data to a storage facility where data would be encrypted, password-protected, and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, anywhere in the world. (This was all done before the Internet was developed.)
