President’s Message
Chapter members,
As the academic year begins for educators and students, I would like to
report on the TSCPA Accounting Academy. The Accounting Academy is a way
for high school students to explore the various career options for CPAs.
Our chapter, as well as some of our Chattanooga area firms, contributed
financially to the support of the 2008 Accounting Academy held July 20-23
at Belmont University. The Accounting Academy was attended by 70 high
school students, nine of whom were from the Chattanooga area. These nine
students from Chattanooga came from two area high schools. It is likely
that these two high schools benefited from people who championed this
academy and encouraged young people to attend. We appreciate those in our
chapter who serve as liaisons in our area high schools to encourage
participation in the various programs we offer. If you could serve as a
liaison in any of our local high schools to promote this academy, as well
as other career awareness programs, you would facilitate the development
of our young accounting candidates in Chattanooga and the surrounding
area. Please contact Lindsey Deweese at the society office if you're interested.
We have an opportunity to support one of our local “Academies” in October.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will present the annual
Accounting Lecture Series in October. Our October meeting will be in
conjunction with this event. We are happy to have this opportunity to
interact with professionals in the academic arena and in other accounting
and finance organizations. This is a first-class event and I trust that
our chapter will be well-represented.
I wish all of our student members, as well as our members who are
educators, success in the coming academic year.
