Marian Schmidt, Nashville Chapter
At-Large Board MemberThank you for the opportunity to serve as one of the Nashville Chapter at-large board members. I have been a member of this chapter since I moved to Nashville in 1997, and am honored to have the opportunity to participate in a leadership position. I have already gained such an appreciation for all the work that goes into our monthly meetings, CPE and other events. It is a pleasure to work with this group of selfless individuals dedicated to enhancing our profession, providing networking and liaison opportunities and serving our community. I have met many of you over the years and most have heard that I do not work in a traditional accounting role. I was recruited out of college to become a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Due to the application process, I worked briefly as auditor and I still count that as invaluable experience in my career. I now work for the Department of Defense Inspector General, and in January will celebrate 25 years as a special agent. The FBI continues to seek the critical skill of accounting, and it is one of the five entry programs under which a person must qualify to become a special agent. I am grateful that our profession provides so many unique options for career paths and affords us the opportunity to make a very respectable living. With that said, it is because I have gained so much from the profession that I am inspired to give back to our community. One of the areas in which I am serving this year is fundraising for the chapter's annual charity, Safe Haven Family Shelter (SHFS). The mission of SHFS is to empower homeless families with children to live independently through financial, social and faith-based guidance. To help support this mission, please bring your checkbook and be prepared to make a contribution to SHFS on Friday, Dec. 5, during our holiday party at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. There will be lots of cool door prizes, and your attendance at the party will automatically include you in the drawings. Donations to SHFS will entitle you to more chances to win. You may also mail your contribution to the TSCPA office if you are not able to attend our Holiday Party, with a check made payable to the Safe Haven Family Shelter. If you or your firm would like to contribute event tickets, gift certificates or other items for door prizes, please contact me at 406-4411 or Kyle Allen at 498-5036. In the future, the chapter Board would like to receive suggestions from our members for charities the chapter can potentially support. If you have a charity you would like to have considered for chapter support please contact me at 406-4411 or Marian.Schmidt@DODIG.MIL. |
